Chengdu Travel FAQ
Planning a trip to Chengdu, Sichuan, China? Find practical answers about giant pandas, Sichuan cuisine, Sanxingdui, Dujiangyan, Mount Qingcheng, travel times and private tour arrangements.
01 How many days should I spend in Chengdu?
Allow around 3–4 days for a first visit to Chengdu. This gives you time to visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, explore the city's historic streets and teahouse culture, and enjoy Sichuan cuisine. Add another day or two if you want to visit the Sanxingdui Museum, Dujiangyan or Mount Qingcheng. Your ideal schedule depends on your interests and transport arrangements.
02 Where can I see giant pandas in Chengdu?
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is one of the city's best-known places to see giant pandas. Panda activity varies with the time of day, weather and season, so an early visit is often worth considering. Check the official visitor information before your trip for current opening arrangements and ticket requirements. If pandas are a priority, allow enough time for the visit rather than squeezing it between several distant attractions.
03 What are the must-see attractions in Chengdu?
Popular Chengdu highlights include the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Wuhou Shrine, Jinli Ancient Street, People's Park and the city's traditional teahouse culture. Food lovers may want to explore local markets and Sichuan restaurants. For a longer stay, consider the Sanxingdui Museum, Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Mount Qingcheng outside the city. Choose attractions according to your interests, available time and transport needs.
04 Can I visit Sanxingdui from Chengdu?
Yes. The Sanxingdui Museum is in Guanghan, outside central Chengdu, and is a popular excursion for travellers interested in ancient Shu civilization and archaeological discoveries. Plan for travel time in both directions as well as time inside the museum. Check the museum's current reservation, ticketing and opening arrangements before departure. It is often easier to combine the visit with a planned transfer or private day trip than to leave the schedule until the last minute.
05 Can I visit Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng on a day trip?
It may be possible to visit both on one carefully planned day, but the experience can feel rushed if you want to explore the historic irrigation system and spend time on Mount Qingcheng's trails or temples. The right plan depends on your preferred walking pace, transport, weather and attraction access. Travellers who enjoy nature or want a more relaxed visit may prefer to allow more time rather than trying to cover everything in a single day.
06 When is the best time to visit Chengdu?
Spring and autumn are often comfortable seasons for exploring Chengdu and nearby attractions. Summers can be hot, humid and rainy, while winters are generally cool and may bring overcast weather. Conditions in the surrounding mountains can differ from those in the city. If seeing pandas is a priority, plan around the opening hours and expected activity patterns, and check local weather forecasts before travelling.
07 What food should I try in Chengdu?
Chengdu is famous for Sichuan cuisine, including mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, Sichuan-style dumplings, hot pot and a wide range of local snacks. Sichuan food can be spicy and may create a numbing sensation from Sichuan peppercorns, but not every dish is intensely hot. Tell your restaurant or guide about your spice tolerance and dietary requirements. Travellers with allergies or strict dietary needs should confirm ingredients directly before ordering.
08 Is Chengdu suitable for a private tour?
Yes. A private Chengdu tour can help coordinate visits to the panda base, historic neighbourhoods, food experiences and nearby cultural attractions around your preferred pace. It can also simplify transfers when you want to combine several locations in one trip. Before confirming the itinerary, consider opening hours, ticket reservations, travel time and whether you prefer a food-focused, cultural or nature-oriented experience.
09 Is Chengdu suitable for families and older travellers?
Chengdu offers a mix of city sightseeing, parks, museums and food experiences that can suit different age groups. However, walking distances, crowds, stairs and the layout of individual attractions can affect comfort. Mount Qingcheng and other outdoor excursions may require more walking than central-city visits. Families and travellers with mobility concerns should choose a suitable pace and discuss transport and walking requirements before finalising their plans.
10 Can I include Chengdu in a first-time China itinerary?
Yes. Chengdu adds a different dimension to a first China trip, combining giant pandas, Sichuan cuisine and regional culture with major city experiences. It can be paired with destinations such as Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai or Zhangjiajie, depending on your total trip length and transport connections. Allow sufficient time for intercity transfers and avoid packing too many distant destinations into a short itinerary.
11 How do I get around Chengdu and its surrounding attractions?
Chengdu has metro services, buses, taxis and ride-hailing options for getting around the city. For excursions to places such as Sanxingdui, Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng, journey times and transfer arrangements depend on the destination and transport method. A private transfer can be useful when visiting several locations or travelling with family. Confirm transport times and attraction access close to your travel date.
12 Can I combine Chengdu with Zhangjiajie?
Yes. Chengdu and Zhangjiajie can complement each other in a China itinerary: Chengdu is known for pandas, Sichuan cuisine and regional heritage, while Zhangjiajie is famous for its dramatic sandstone landscapes. The best order depends on your arrival and departure cities, available flights or rail connections, and total trip length. Plan realistic transfer time between destinations rather than treating either place as a brief stop.
13 Can Sunda Travel customise a Chengdu itinerary?
Sunda Travel can help plan a private China journey around your travel dates, interests, group size and preferred pace. Your Chengdu itinerary can focus on giant pandas, Sichuan food, ancient Shu culture, historic sites or nearby nature excursions.
